Discover Our Journey Through Time

Evangel Hospital was established in 1959 as part of the SIM Mission field to win more souls for Christ and to provide medical care for both missionaries and the community at large.

Although the Hospital came into being to provide medical care, it soon became a training ground for Sudan Interior Mission Medical Auxiliary Training School (SIMMATS) for training of medical auxiliary staff for SIM dispensaries. The SIMMATS was transferred to Kagoro, now known as ECWA College of Health Technology, Kagoro.

Between 1977 and 1979, the Plateau State government took over the management of the hospital.

Evangel Hospital became the first hospital to commence postgraduate residency training program in family medicine in northern Nigeria in 1981.

The hospital was upgraded to Bingham University Teaching Hospital in 2010 and became a teaching hospital for students of Bingham University College of Medicine & Allied Health Sciences.

The first documented case of Lassa fever was in a nurse (Ms. Lilly Pinneo) who got infected while working at Evangel Hospital when a missionary was flown from Lassa in then North-Eastern State (now Borno State).

Pinneo Centre for Infectious Disease at Bingham university teaching hospital is now named in honour of her service.
